Most web designers believe web design is everything in setting up a web site. They are correct: bad design does kill good content. But most of them get it wrong when it comes to “What is a good web design?”
Bloggerato.com was started out of frustration in getting a decent wordpress blog design that I desired. A year ago I knew very little about wordpress, CSS and web design. When I started my wordpress blog I searched through all the free wordpress templates available and could not find one that fitted my needs for simplicity and neatness. I started my journey in learning more about CSS and wordpress. I modified the looks of some blog templates to suit the needs of some like-minded bloggers.
So what is a good web blog design?
The best web design is the design that is designed for the content. Great web design highlights CONTENT, not design itself. Great web designs look SIMPLE and CLEAN. They do not have big banners that take up one third of the page. They do not have overriding color tones that pale your photos. They do not have all the (blog community self-serving) RSS links and buttons that make 80% of the readers wonder what those are all about.
SIMPLE and CLEAN enableyour content to stand out. And unless your content is bad you will want your content to be the focus of your readers.
Great web design OPTIMIZED space and search engine for your content. They don’t cut the left and right of your screen just to cater for the minorities who use 800×600 screen size. However, they are designed for these minorities too, so that these users don’t have to scroll left and right to look at the full screen. Great web designs enhance the search engine optimization structure of wordpress by making sure the navigation links appear in every post and page within a blog.
There is no nice word here as it is out of frustration towards the (almost) entire wordpress templates designing community (exclude those who produce good blog templates). But I must not forget it was same community that provided me free templates to use for my blog. Deep down I am grateful for their act of sharing their works for free.
